The department has a professionally-equipped photo studio. Photographs of objects from the Antikensammlung der Universität Bern,
for scientific publications, and for exhibitions are all taken in the studio. Additionally, photographs are digitalized for the Photoarchiv Zbinden (see below).
The photo studio also houses a Periphery Camera – a specialty from the analog age! It is over two meters long and, thanks to its synchronized rotational movement, can photograph various cylindrical objects up to about 80 cm (vases, seals, etc.).
The digital Photoarchiv Zbindin – which mainly contains medium format black-and-white negatives taken by Jürg Zbinden, the department photographer from 1970-2011 – is in progress. Photos are archived using the high-quality Nikon Coolscan 9000, which is compatible with Mac, Adobe image editing programs, and a closed chain of color-calibrated devices, including an Epson Stylus Pro 4800 printer that prints formats up to A2.
Since 2019 the photo studio has been operated by a photographer from the Faculty of Humanities.
