Methods and Issues in Establishing Pottery Typologies

Workshop: 11–13 April 2024

Although the way we deal with pottery is highly dependent on research traditions in different periods and geographic areas, we time and time again face the same methodological problems, which can simply be summarised by: How do we categorise ceramics? The workshop aims to create a platform for exchange and discussion and to connect all those at the IAW (and beyond) who work on ceramics. Besides PhD and postdoc researchers, we encourage in particular BA and MA students to participate! Rather than presenting the material culture of a site, region or period, we would like you as a participant to explicitly address the problems when studying a pottery corpus: Pick a problem you’ve faced and present it in a way that colleagues from other areas can participate in the discussion and share their expertise and experience.
